And Take Them Someplace New (9/1)

The point I made earlier today of meeting people where they are is only half the story. Then you take them to where they will be so happy to go, even if they don’t know it yet. In just two days, I’m feeling these preschool classroom teachers daring to express themselves more exuberantly, feeling more confident in their musicality and with a little playful orchestrated pressure, even willing to ask questions! (I told them that if I was a teacher who would only give them a good grade if they asked a question, what would it be?)

The energy coming back to me is still far less than I’m used to, especially with that last fantastic group in Hangzhou. But perhaps that makes all these little steps of progress more meaningful. At the end of today’s class, I asked:

“Did you learn something useful today?” A lot of nodding heads.

“Did you have fun learning it?”  Again, general consent.

“Did you discover that perhaps you’re more musical than you thought?”

A moment to consider and then many agreeing that they did.

“Are you excited about coming back tomorrow? A sincere and spontaneous burst of cheering enthusiasm.

That meant the world to me. Who will we be tomorrow?
