Coffee or/and Tea

If you’re ever in a social situation where you need to divide a group into two teams, there’s a long list of go-tos based on the simple premise “Who likes this or who prefers that?” I’m not talking the controversial big-ticket items like man/woman, gay/straight, Republican/Democrat, Christian/Muslim, rich/poor, etc. I’m thinking the more playful opposites like:

“Do you prefer…

• Coffee or tea?

• Wine or beer?

• Cats or dogs?

• Mac or PC?

• Window or aisle seat?

• Are you a morning person or night person? ”

You get the idea. Naturally, “neither” or “both” are always acceptable answers, so yes, the world is always more complex than two choices. But chances are most people will lean toward one side or another in the above list.

I’ve mostly been a “neither” or “a little bit of either” in the coffee/ tea divide. Lately, I’ve developed a little habit of a daily shot of cold brew coffee (like the equivalent of a few tablespoons) with a half a small glass of oat milk. I’ve always liked the taste of coffee, but never felt I needed the caffeine. But now I imagine that little shot helps me get through the afternoon a bit more awake.

The other day at Trader Joe’s, I bought something new, a black tea Chai concentrate that I drank in the same way. This one has sugar, so definitely sweeter, but the same kind of feeling of a little extra boost and a tiny bit of pleasure on the tongue.

And that’s when this astounding thought hit me. Has anybody every combined tea and coffee in the same drink?!!! I’ve never heard of it. Have you? After mulling this over for a few days, I decided to try it! No thunderbolts or lightning flashes appeared that spoke with clear authority: “YOU’VE DISCOVERED THE NEXT CULINARY FAD!! MONETIZE IT QUICK AND GET RICH!!!” But it seemed okay to me.

If any of you readers want to run with that ball down the field, you have my permission. But if indeed the money starts flowing it, I think it’s only fair to give me 10%. The date of this Blogpost is fixed and while it probably wouldn’t hold up in court if you claimed you had already thought of this and I didn’t patent it, you probably wouldn’t have to pay me. But of course, it would be the right thing to do.

Enjoy your drink.
