I'm Back!

If there are any faithful readers left after my two weeks of silence, welcome back! I should have anticipated the forced “gone fishing” status of all that’s not available in China— no way to access my Blog, Facebook, Youtube, WhatsApp, the Internet in general (including Google Search) and e-mail on my computer. All that was available was e-mail on my phone. It was like a trip to the Stone Age of 1990 or so!

And truth be told, it was mostly fine. I certainly would have preferred to have access to this Blog and to keep up with e-mail on the computer, but it really wasn’t a problem to do without the 24/7 communication in all those other venues. Hoping to reduce my screen time having felt the pleasure of not checking it so often.

At any rate, I’m back in San Francisco and I did keep writing Blogposts knowing I could post them when I returned. The only difference if that I’ll post them in reverse order—well, really, the more logical order when narrating a travel diary. But when I write them day by day, they end up going from the past to the present rather than the other way around. Make sense? At any rate, I dated each entry at the end so the sequence should be clear. The first entry (Time Travel) kicks off the trip starting on August 18th and it goes all the way to today, September 1st.

It's not exactly riveting armchair travel, more the usual reflection on what I actual spent my days doing teaching music to teachers. But hopefully moments when you, the reader, feel like you’re not in Kansas anymore and get enjoy a bit of the flavor of this notable culture, seen through the limited lens of one Western traveler. Pour yourself a cup of jasmine tea, sit back and enjoy!
