THE GHANA CHRONICLES: IC at KFC in HO—6/29-23

After the closing circle, a group decided to celebrate with some ice cream. A treat I hadn’t had in some two months and one I always associate with summer. So I signed up for the mini-adventure and we took to the streets. But not without trepidation. The place that served it was—KFC!! The first sign of the post-colonialist invasion I saw on this trip and my political ambivalence about supporting it. But it was a one-time thing and we got to meet an interesting young Ghanaian man and his Spanish-speaking Cuban friends. The ice cream was soft-serve and about as terrible as I imagined for this traveler who has been spoiled by Italian gelato. But still cold and refreshing.

Standing around outside discussing my transgression against my moral values, I decided it was a memorable occasion. “Someday,” I said, “I’ll be talking with a group of travelers and they’ll be boasting about their adventures going to Everest Base Camp or crossing the Sahara on camels or boating on the Amazon River deep into the heart of the rainforest and I’ll say, ‘Yeah, not bad. But who amongst you ever had IC at KFC in Ho?!’ Ka-ching!”

PS Didn’t take a photo for that occasion, but here’s some ice cream from Italy!
